Dalia (Broken Wheat) Upma

Dalia is made from broken wheat and is very popular in India as a healthy food. Dalia is low in cholesterol and fat, and is a good source of carbs, iron and fiber. It is considered especially beneficial for diabetics. Here is a very easy to make dalia recipe for breakfast. You could also make this as a light meal or snack, served with some yogurt & pickle.

  • Wash & soak dalia in some warm water for about 10 minutes.
  • Peel & cut potato & the carrot into small cubes. Chop onion fine. Chop green chillies & ginger into fine pieces.
  • Heat oil in a pan & then add mustard seeds. When the seeds start to splutter, add in the onion,green chillies &?curry leaves, followed by the potatoes & carrot. Mix well & after a few minutes, add in the spices & tomato.
  • Meanwhile boil about two & a half cups of water.
  • Drain the soaked dalia & add it into the pan. Sauté for a few minutes. It is important that you add hot water to the dalia for it to cook properly.
  • Once, the dalia starts cooking, lower the flame & cook covered about 10 to 12 minutes until the dalia is fully cooked. Serve warm, garnished with coriander leaves & a little lemon juice if desired.

Notes

You can cook the dalia upma in a pressure cooker too. Saute the vegetables and soaked dalia and after adding hot water, lower the flame and  pressure cook for  3 whistles.
