Kerala Fish Curry

Yields: 4 Servings Difficulty: Medium Prep Time: 20 Mins Cook Time: 25 Mins Total Time: 45 Mins

This recipe also known as the Kottayam style fish curry is fiery red in color & is equally fiery (spicy) in taste. It is for only those who have like to enjoy spicy meals. But once you have acquired a taste for this you might be found craving for this dish at times.. It tastes awesome with plain white rice as also with rotis, parathas or tapioca (a staple dish in Kerala). My mother who made this often says it tastes even better if kept out for a day or so! Traditionally they used to do this in Kerala.

  • Wash and soak the kudampuli in warm water.
  • Clean and cut the fish into even sized pieces, add salt and keep aside for about 20 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, finely chop the ginger, shallots and keep aside.
  • In a saucepan heat the oil (I use olive oil) and add the mustard seeds followed by the fenugreek seeds. Once the seeds splutter, add the shallots, ginger & curry leaves and fry a little on medium fry about a minute or so. Add in the turmeric, chilli powder and water and bring this to a boil.
  • Take a clay (earthernware) pot and arrange the fish pieces in it. Gently pour the boiling spice sauce over the fish. Stir it a second and add the soaked pieces of kodumpuli. Cover and cook on low to medium flame for about 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, sprinkle fenugreek powder over the curry and add in the coconut oil if required. Holding the edge, gently shake the clay pot with the fish curry-taking take not to break the delicate fish pieces. Check for salt and cook for a minute or so more.
  • Kudampuli : This is found in many Kerala recipes especially the coastal seafood recipes. It is also known as gambooge or Malabar tamarind or fish tamarind. It is not to be mistaken with kokum used in Goan and Maharastrian recipes, though they both belong to the same family. Kudampuli is often used in Ayurveda for cure against diseases like arthritis and ulcers. It also has digestive properties.
