Chicken Jalfrezi is a popular chicken dish and it has its origin tied to eastern state in India. The word “jhal” comes from Bengali language and it means spicy. The word “frezi” (Parhezi) comes from Urdu language and it means diet food. You can try making this dish in stir fry style and you can make this curry in a hurry!

- Clean and cut chicken into cubes and keep aside.
- Grate one onion and finely chop the ginger and garlic.
- Puree the tomatoes in a blender.
- Chop bell peppers and onion into medium cubes and keep aside.
- Heat a frying pan with oil and add the grated onions. Brown it evenly for 5 minutes or so and then add the finely chopped ginger-garlic.
- Add chicken and fry for another 5 minutes.
- When the chicken is a little brown, add salt and spices.
- Add tomato puree, mix well and let it cook on medium heat for about 20 minutes or until the chicken is fully cooked. Add about ¼ cup of water if desired.
- Once the chicken is cooked, add in the cubed onion and bell peppers. Simmer on low heat for 2 to 3 minutes and garnish with fresh finely chopped cilantro.
- This dish goes very well with saffron rice or you may serve it with plain basmati rice and tadka dal.
