Rice & Moong Dal Chaklis

Chaklis are circular/spiral shaped snacks which are usually made in the Western & Southern parts of India. In Gujarat, it is known as chakris and in the south it is called murukkus. It is often made during festivals like Diwali and is a favorite tea time snack of both the young and adults alike. Chaklis are made from either rice & some kind of lentils like moong dal or urad dal. It can even be made from wheat flour or all purpose flour and lentils.

  • Wash & cook yellow moon dal. After it is mashed and cooled, add it to the rest of the ingredients and form a dough.
  • Keep the dough covered and refrigerated about 20 minutes. Heat oil in a wok. Insert the star shaped attachment the chakli maker (chakli maker with 4 to 5 attachments are usually brass make instruments which you can buy at most Indian grocery stores).
  • Take some of the dough mixture into the chakli maker & roll out chaklis on a clean flat surface.
  • Fry the chaklis in hot oil golden brown.
  • Cool & store in airtight containers.
