Aloo Gosht (Mutton Curry With Potatoes)

Aloo Gosht is a red meat (lamb, goat or beef) and potatoes dish. Here is a simple recipe for making aloo gosht.

Ingredients
  • kg. mutton
  • 1 tbsp. turmeric
  • 2 tbsp. ginger garlic paste
  • some salt to taste
  • 2 onions
  • 2 potatoes
  • 2 tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp. coriander pd.
  • 3 tbsp. kashimiri chilli pd.
  • 2 green chillies
  • 3 tbsp. coriander leaves
  • 3 tbsp. mint leaves
  • 3 tbsp. oil/ghee
  • Grind to a coarse powder:
  • 7 cloves
  • 2 cardamom
  • 1 inch stick cinnamon
Instructions
  1. Wash mutton and cut into medium pieces about 1 inch. Add salt, lemon juice, turmeric, ginger-garlic paste to the mutton pieces and mix well. Put his in a pressure cooker and cook for about 6 minutes (3 whistles).
  2. Thinly slice onions, tomatoes and green chilles into long pieces. Peel and cut potatoes into 2 inch cubes.
  3. Take a pan and heat ghee/oil. Add onions and saute until evenly browned. Now add in the potato cubes and let it cook about 5 minutes on medium heat, covering the pan.
  4. Meanwhile. put all the ingredients for the powder into a mixer jar or mortar and pestle and grind it into a coarse powder.
  5. Now remove lid from the pan and add slit green chilles, tomatoes and a little salt to taste. (Remember you have added salt for cooking the mutton too). Fry for about a minute and now add in the ground spices and 2 tbsp. chilli powder.
  6. Add in the contents of the pressure cooker. Mix well, cover and let the curry simmer about 25 to 30 minutes. Serve garnished with finely chopped mint and coriander leaves. Goes well with rice or any kind of Indian breads.

You can use same quantity of either lamb or beef instead of the mutton for this recipe.
